Dr. Swayne is available to assess your patient’s radiographs at no charge. These can be submitted via email to sswayne@ghvetsurgery.com or through ghvsurgery.smart.vet. Please give at least 72  hours for a response, unless the case is an emergency. If you require a faster response please indicate in the subject that it is an emergency and please call as well. Note that Dr. Swayne is not available after 5 pm on weekdays or on weekends.

If the study is more extensive, it must be submitted through ghvsurgery.smart.vet and be sure to include a complete, concise medical history including signalment and physical examination findings.

Postoperative care and management

Referring veterinarians will be directly involved in the postoperative re-examination of surgical patients.

Discharge instructions will be provided by GHVS for your medical records and for the pet owner. You are encouraged to send progress reports and recheck radiographs to Dr. Swayne and she will help you guide the postoperative care and treatment plan. Recheck radiographs must be submitted by email to sswayne@ghvetsurgery.com or through ghvsurgery.smart.vet.

Any patient undergoing orthopedic surgery must have a physical examination performed by a veterinarian at the time of suture removal and at any radiograph recheck appointment to minimize the chance of missing a complication early on. Recheck examinations can be scheduled with Dr. Swayne, please have your veterinarian communicate this through ghvsurgery.smart.vet or email surgerybooking@ghvetsurgery.com.

Rehabilitation is an essential aspect of the recovery of a pet from orthopedic surgery. Recommendations as to where this can be performed will also be provided. This should be pursued under the direct supervision of a Certified Canine rehabilitation Practitioner.

What is a board-certified Veterinary Surgeon?

A board-certified Veterinary Surgeon has taken significant additional training to increase their knowledge base and skill level. It requires a year-long rotating internship, followed by a 3-yr surgical residency in an institution recognized by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. The residency training is under the direct supervision of board-certified surgeons. Following the completion of the residency program and acceptance of a publication contributing to the progress of veterinary surgery, a board exam is written by a qualifying candidate. More information is available through the American College of Veterinary Surgeons website at www.acvs.org.
